Having revamped my site and added more services, I’ve also decided to revamp my blogs and add more value.
For those single or not who enjoy the humor of my blogs – first, thank you – you can still read them here at the end of every week. You can find entertaining tips in every one of my tweets, which are posted on both Twitter and Facebook. For those who want matter-of-fact marketing tips on writing online dating profiles, I’m launching this blog as a first in a series.
From now on, at the beginning of every week, I’ll feature excerpts from a couple of dating profiles that I’ve come across while scannning dating sites, followed by a critique based on my marketing expertise. Feel free to send me your profile, if you’d me to critique an (anonymous) excerpt for this blog.
Though profile specific, the tips will also be advantageous to those who need to craft any communication that requires strangers to take notice. Here goes:
How to write a dating profile, tip 1:
I had a broken neck at the age of 18. I then became a Chiropractor but then I had a serious 160mph rollover car accident. After that, I was a victim of a very violent crime, two years later I was run over by another car. This ended my Chiro career, but then I started my own company. Life was great until my romantic relationship went south with my business partner and money. I then started working on small business projects but then I crashed on my dirt bike and sustained several more injuries. I’m almost recovered now and I’m back on my feet in business. I’m now ready to meet my ideal partner.
Let’s just say that someone this accident-prone might scare off women who don’t have a death wish.
How to write a dating profile, tip 2:
Hi everyone, I find it really hard to put into words the kind of person I am. So I guess the best way to judge me is to send me a message. It would be nice to meet some new people. Hope to hear from everyone.
In keeping with how concise this profile is, I have one word for it – boring. It presumes you’re good-looking enough to get by on nothing more than a photo (I suppose that’s more than one word, but my strength is not numbers).
How to write a dating profile, tip 3:
Have been on this sight before with no luck but thought I would try it again I am a single mother of one. I am very hard working. I don’t have a lot of time to spare but will make the time for the right one. I like to do a variety of things when I can including day trips, markets, dinner and drinks with friends. I like all kinds of music except country and when it comes to movies I will watch just about anything. I am looking to find my best friend right now and see where it goes from there.
It’s not a good idea to begin a profile with the implication that you’ve had no luck. It sounds as though you’re either not popular, or you’re too picky. It also carries an element of being at a point of desperation given that previous efforts were fruitless. As you read the opening lines of this profile, she makes it clear that she doesn’t have much time. So, even though she says she’d make time for the right one, there’s nonetheless a lot of hesitation throughout. It gives the impression that dating would be a lot of work, which is not at all welcoming.
I hope you liked the first in this series. If you’d like me to critique an excerpt from your profile and feature it here (anonymously), feel free to send it to me.
