Dating advice from a copywriter, a screenwriter and other unlikely sources.

Welcome to the only dating blog about men, women and marketing.

As an ad writer and marketing expert who’s transferred her significant talents (my blog, my spin) to writing online dating profiles, I’m always collecting interesting relationship advice and ads. I know, I know… “ads”, right? How do profile writing and advertising end up in one dating blog? Advertising is all about relationships. Its job is to create relationships between consumers and products. The ad techniques that go into great advertising are the same ones I use on dating profiles.

As such, this week’s blog combines dating advice that I found for men, dating advice for women, as well as a couple of ads that exemplify great marketing. Enjoy!

Dating advice to men

I was googling “dating advice for men” when I came across “Dating Tips From Woody Allen Movies”. The fact that a decent site seemed to be legitimizing Woody Allen’s peculiarities made me curious. Actually, it made me queasy first and then curious. Still, this how-come-he’s-not-in-jail-for-being-a-pedophile celeb’s on-screen relationship tactics are interesting.

Dating advice to women

I tried to find a female equivalent for Woody Allen, but the closest celeb was Ellen Barkin thanks to her creepy 30-year gap with Sam Levinson. Still, he’s never been like a son to her so I didn’t think the comparison was fair (besides, they look so bubbly together, don’t they?). Finally, I did what all good creative people do – I found another angle, that being “movies”. Hence here are 10 dating tips from Sex and the City.

Advertising secret

These days, you’ll note that many articles (not just dating tips from Sex and the City) use numbers in their headings. That’s because, according to some data somewhere by some social media expert, stories with digits in the headline get shared more than those that do not. Hence, be prepared for years of “10 ways to…” and “5 top…” and “7 tips on…” and “6 most …”

Personally, I find the technique to be among one of my top 10 pet peeves (yes, that was my effort at wit) along with commercials that use several people to complete one sentence. Ugh, spare me. Then again I did it myself with “10 online dating safety tips every woman needs to know”, but that’s because I’ll sacrifice my philosophy so that those important online dating safety tips get shared. This is not a hint that’s subtle, by the way.

Relationship advice by…

Today’s blog features two entertaining ads for what could have been considered a boring product – sugarless gum.  When you view the ads, consider the elements that make them so good:

1) They’re really funny, but the humor has subtlety. Neither ad tries so hard to entertain that it loses the punch.  I always keep this balance in mind when crafting dating profiles.

2) They’re simple. They don’t oversell the message. Nor do they try to fill the space with a lot of other messages. In writing dating profiles, I too limit the space to key points (that is, key interests) and I get them cross in a simple, but dynamic way.

On a final note, though these blogs offer great marketing advice, I tend  to write them for fun. The same is true of my tweets where I make wry commentary on outrageous dating profiles that I’ve come across on dating sites.

My real love though is crafting online dating profiles – and I take each one seriously.

Have a look at theonline dating profile samples and LinkedIn profiles samples and see for yourself. With 20+ years as an ad writer and marketing expert, I’m trained to get you noticed. Get started by completing the online personality quiz.

The quiz is the first step to a great online dating profile. The second step  though is to hire me. I’m good at what I do (see the testimonials) and I love doing it. By the way, if you like what you’ve read, then you’ll like my tweets and  Facebook page. Feel free to leave comments. It’s great to hear from you.
