Woody Allen, dads and ads.

I write ads. I write online dating profiles and LinkedIn profiles using marketing techniques. I also write this odd little blog about men, women and advertising.

Today’s the day when “World’s Greatest Dad” T-shirts actually make a sale or two. On that note, who could be greater dad than Woody Allen. After all, he loves his children so much, he married one.

Thankfully, countless other fathers  make positive contributions. This week’s blog begins with one of the loveliest.

Dads and Daughters

I found the sweetest, most poignant and most playful articles today. It’s by Michael Mitchell and called, “50 Rules for Dads of Daughters”. It has a slight religious overtone, to which some of you may not relate and that’s okay. However, the overall message is wonderful for the spirit. I love number 18. Truer words could not be spoken.

Dating a Dad

Match.com has a good article on how to date a single dad. The advice is simple common sense, which is why I like it. It can also cause terror. After all, it appropriately reminds us that there is no “ex”. Because they have children together, a single dad’s former wife will have the longevity of a cockroach or a Kardashian.

Ads and Dads

The Society pages had an article that featured vintage Father’s Day ads.

It’s so interesting how the role of fathers has changed, not to mention the evolution of advertising.

This week’s featured ad is for Oreo. On one hand, I appreciate that it’s not the typical cookie ad showing a lot of kids and family fun shots. So, kudos for taking a different approach.

On the other hand, I find it emotionally manipulative and, as such, insincere.

I’ve noticed the same approach with online dating profiles. I’ve seen pictures of men holding babies, kittens and their elderly mothers (presumably to show that there are no issues).. I’ve seen pictures of women with babies, kittens and their dads (presumably to show that there are no issues).  Instead of trying too hard to look like a “nice” person, just make it clear on your profile by having a positive attitude and sharing stories that demonstrate your likeability. It’s much stronger and more earnest.

As an ad writer and marketing expert, I’m trained to know how to put a positive spin on you in way that’s honest. The first step is to complete the personality quiz. It helps uncover your personal anecdotes and traits, which I then add  to your dating profile so that it’s unique, interesting – and genuinely you (one of my strengths is creating a profile that sounds like you).

Still not sure? Then check out theonline dating samplesof my work, as well as the LinkedInprofiles. If you like the blogs, then you’ll like the tweets. I also encourage you to join me on Facebook.
