Sometimes sex sells us short.

Miley-Cyrus-2013-Billboard-Music-Awards-in-Las-Vegas-9Miley Cyrus’s performance at the VMAs was called everything from lewd to racist. Personally, I don’t think African Americans have exclusive rights to twerking, nor do I think most would want to.

However, I would agree with the former.

Still, as the drama unfolded, all I could think of is that this is a 20-year old girl.

She’s barely out of her teens.

Yet, with the approval of parents and managers, she went out on stage salaciously sticking out her tongue, simulating oral sex, fingering herself and twerking up against the crotch of a 36-year old man who sang, “I’ll give you something to tear your ass in two”.

Robin Thicke thought the performance was “dope”, a word he’s no doubt familiar with.

While people reacted with disgust at her antics, all I could feel was wrenching sadness. She’s only 20! According to some child development charts, she could still be considered in her “late adolescence”.  Her performance showed a crass and exaggerated sexuality that unquestionably demonstrated a naïve and immature understanding of sexiness.

This girl did not seem comfortable in her own skin and yet there she was performing in the same way that many entertainers – male and female – her age do.

Watch any music video and it’s clear that sex sells. Sadly, it can also sell us short.

As someone who went from the glib world of advertising to the kinder, more rewarding world of helping people promote themselves, I don’t want romance to be dead.  I don’t want sex after three dates to count as courtship. I also don’t want an “ass being torn in two” to enter the mainstream of dating rituals.

So, for anyone who, like me, needs exposure to something that reminds us all why love, respect, trust and sweetness matter so much, here’s a video that a friend shared with me.  By the way, the song is now No. 10 on iTunes, right up there with Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke, which is truly heartening.
