Writing your dating profile. Tips for Nov. 20, 2013.

imagesToday I scanned online dating profiles on JDate.

I chose to critique an excerpt from one particular dating profile because it’s a pretty typical example of all of them.

In other words, it lacks distinction.

Excerpt from the dating profile of a 34-year old woman.

I’m a down-to-earth girl who loves the simple things like seeing a good movie whether that’s on the big screen or curled up at home. I’m pretty easy. I’m not the kind of woman who needs to be taken out to fancy dinners all the time. I do like them but I also like a romantic meal at home or even pizza! I can be just as comfortable all dressed up in heels as I am in my yoga pants.

My critique.

My critique of this dating profile is quite simple: there’s nothing at all defined about this woman. She likes anything and everything. She can have a fancy dinner or pizza. She can wear heels or runners. She likes to go out and stay in.

She’s essentially anyone you want her to be and, therefore, nobody special.

Profiles that are indistinct are problematic for two reasons:

1) There’s nothing memorable about them. You end up sounding like so many other people that you become one of many.

2) By being all things to all people you end up attracting a lot of people – and many of them the wrong ones. Instead, by being defined, you end up weeding out the wrong matches and attracting the right ones.

The other reason why a distinct profile is better than a generic one is because it allows the reader to find ice breakers. The better and more distinct your profile, then the better and more engaging your emails.

A final word about writing your online dating profile.

I post critiques of online dating profiles on a regular basis. The ones I choose tend to have fairly common mistakes anyone can relate to. By pointing them out, my hope is that it will keep you from making them yourself.

That said, you can avoid the hassle and the mistakes altogether by hiring me. As an ad writer and marketing expert, I know how to find your unique traits and how to present them in an engaging way.

Better yet, I use your words and anecdotes to do it so that you go online with an honest representation.
