I just finished reading a number of online dating profiles that were so generic not one stood out. As an ad writer whose purpose is to make people get noticed, this prompted me to provide the following online dating profile writing tip:
If you want to get noticed in the competitive environment of online dating, then you need to be different from everyone else.
Contrary to the social norms by which we usually abide, online dating requires that you stand out not fit in. For instance, today I read a lot of this:
I love the outdoors, but love being inside too.
I’m very active, but can be a couch potato too.
I really like action movies, but I’m pretty much game to watch anything.
I’m very easy going and am happy to try new things.
Fact is, we’re all a little bit of everything. But what are you mostly? You only have a few paragraphs to get to the core of who you are, so pick information that most closely represents you.
In addition, though we all share a lot of the same interests, what makes us unique is our combination of interests, in addition to our rituals and experiences while taking part in those interests. For instance, I lot of people love to cook, but what you love to cook and the funny mishaps that may have occurred while cooking – that’s what makes you different.
So when you’re writing your online dating profile, be sure to find the twists, quirks, experiences, expressions and rituals that add up to a very unique ‘you’.
