Online Dating and LinkedIn Profile Writing Advice
I regularly critique excerpts from random dating and LinkedIn profiles (for anonymity). By pointing out dos and don'ts from actual profiles, you too can look at your own with a critical eye and improve on your personal branding.
Online Dating Profile Dos, Don’ts And “Oh No You Didn’ts”.
As someone who’s spent about 20 years as a marketing expert and ad writer, I know the importance of a good presentation. Now that I also write online dating profiles, I’m fully immersed in the world of personal presentations too. As a result, I’ve picked up a lot of suggestions. Here are just a few: Online dating dos 1) Do wear clothes. That is – apparel other than undershirts, Santa outfits and bathing suits. 2) Do write a profile. One long… read more →
Online Dating Profiles & “the time is now” (which it isn’t).
As one who’s been in advertising for 20 years (check out my bio), I’ve worked with a lot of clients. Some understood marketing. Others, inexplicably, thought they did. For instance, I had a client who believed that his headline, “are you a man or a clown”, would be a great way to advertise age-defying moisturizer that had nothing to do with clowns (or men, for that matter). I also had a client insist that the words “as easy as magic”… read more →
Online Dating Profiles and Don’t Judge a Book…
I was scanning random dating profiles the other day looking for inspiration. I do that often. I pick a dating site and read through its various dating profiles. I then find myself so shocked by the poor judgment singles exercise that I end up writing a blog filled with cleverly scribed outrage (well, clever according to me). Not this time though. This time, the poor judgment was mine. You see, I read the dating profile of a woman who, by… read more →
The online dating profile tip for women (that men will love).
I read a number of random dating profiles today of single, straight women and decided that they’d be as appealing to men as the words “we need to talk”. Ladies, there’s nothing quite so misguided as filling up your profile with long, emotional narratives that culminate with verses by Rumi. Seriously, a lot of women’s dating profiles read like Harlequin romances. Harlequin – you know those books that are all the rage among men (yes, I’m being facetious). Still others… read more →
Online dating profiles and decorum.
The other day while walking along a busy street, a woman yelled to her friend a few feet away, “I have to pee. I’ll be right back.” I don’t have an issue with people urinating. I do it frequently myself. However, I do take issue with people announcing their intentions so publicly and to so many strangers (I’m also not a fan of the word “pee” for anyone over 13 years old, but so be it). Later that day as… read more →
Online dating and corrupt Canadians.
If you’ve kept abreast of international news, Canadian political scandals are reading an awful lot like US ones. Rob Ford, Toronto’s mayor, was allegedly caught on tape using crack. Given that he’s very pink and portly, I’m relieved this isn’t a sex scandal. Still, it’s crack cocaine and not pot, so he’s screwed nevertheless. That’s not all though, another pink and portly Canadian politician by the name of Mike Duffy is also making shocking headlines. In his case, due to… read more →
Online dating profiles and Abercombie & Fitch
The other day I happened upon an online dating profile that wounded me with its cruelty. Here’s an excerpt: i love the bombardment of older overweight woman, lol. Whats with that, lol. So i,m a tall hansome guy, so do tell me what i would want from an older overweight woman, lol really, lol. And by no means do i mean to offend or hurt anyone with age or size but really, think about it. Though I’m not overweight, reading this caused me pain.… read more →
Online dating experts. Says who?
The other day I discovered an online dating advice column for women written by a man. His credentials? He’s a guy who’s online dated. I also discovered a woman who wrote an online dating advice book for men. Her credentials? That she’s a woman who’s online dated. I found several online dating coaches too. Their credentials? That they’ve online dated, of course! Some even touted the fact that they had found their soul mates, thus implying that this success made them… read more →
Martha Stewart’s online dating profile. A critique.
Usually when I critique online dating profiles, I’m either getting paid for it (I write online dating profiles, of course, but I also do phone consultations) or I do the critique here, on this blog, using only an excerpt from a random online dating profile so that it’s kept anonymous. However, given that Martha Stewart’s online dating profile on match.com is public knowledge, I’ve cut and pasted it here. You’ll find my critiques throughout in red. ABOUT HER & WHO… read more →
Online Dating Profiles. The Agony, part 26.
I stay abreast of behavioral trends by regularly scanning dating sites and, specifically, reading online dating profiles. As a marketing expert and online dating profile writer, it’s essential that I not only see the evolution of dating behavior, but keep ahead of it too. The most powerful marketing is based on research and…oh who am I kidding? I don’t do it because I’m driven by admirable professionalism. I do it because online dating profiles are to me what Honey Boo… read more →
