Cry me a Joan Rivers. The dating blog about big babies.

I write ads for a living. I also write  online dating profiles (check out my online dating profile samples) and LinkedIn profiles (check out my LinkedIn profile samples) using ad techniques. In addition, I write this quirky dating blog about men, women and advertising. Enjoy!

The other day I watched a clip of Joan Rivers causing a scene at Costco. With camera crew and bullhorn in hand (talk about redundant), she cuffed herself to a shopping cart to protest the fact that the chain has refused to sell her book.

She even compared the perceived persecution to that of Nazi Germany. Nice one Joan. Very sensitive.

The reason for the book ban? Essentially because the back cover was not family friendly.

It’s a family store. Kids over the age of six can read. The decision is conservative, yes. It’s also appropriate.

The incident culminated in police officers removing her from the premises, thus keeping them from those boring murders, kidnappings, rapes and assaults that usually fill their roster.

With no consequences and all that publicity (comment threads are actually suggesting that this narcissistic twit is a marketing genius!), her behavior has been rewarded. So, of course, she has threatened to pull the same stunt elsewhere. What a bully.

Rewarding bad behavior is epidemic among celebrities. Charlie Sheen loses Two and Half Men only to win Anger Management – shamelessly capitalizing on the subject of his ill-gained notoriety. Alec Baldwin defied Federal Aviation regulations, was rude to AA staff, had to be removed from the plane, and delayed the flight of fellow passengers – all because the big baby wanted to play a word game with his friends. Yet, Capital One is happy to leverage it.

Celebrities like these abuse their power and the public is far too enamored of them (the public is just as guilty).

In a less than flattering tribute to these obnoxious brats – and the people who encourage them – today’s dating blog is about bad behavior. Before you read on, I’d like to congratulate Costco and American Airlines for showing integrity.

A prescription for bad behavior.

I found a blog called Shrink 4 Men written by Dr. Tara. It’s a really good resource. It’s also where I found this great article about changing your role within a bad relationship. Here’s a pertinent quote:

People persist in both positive and negative behaviors because there’s a payoff: a primary gain or secondary gain. They’re rewarded with pleasure, they avoid punishment or an unpleasant consequence, their beliefs are validated or they get to feel good about themselves. There’s always an emotional, psychological and/or physical stake—feeling good or avoiding feeling bad.

Men, women and manipulation.

I like this article on AskMen. It’s pretty funny. Poor hapless men are being coached on how not to be manipulated by women. The suggestions are simple, but sound. Basically, like Dr. Tara suggested, change your behavior and her behavior will change.

Douchebags and sexual favors. On his page, Musings on Life and Love Shaun Swegman recalls a time when he finally understood why his friend not only goes with bad guys, she returns to them. The blog doesn’t go into root causes of this behavior, but it certainly sheds light on an interesting perspective.

Celebrity tantrums and good reasons for birth control.

I’ve actually posted this ad before. It’s old, but classic and so funny. It’s also relevant given how I feel about celebrity tantrums. What I like about this ad is that it doesn’t do the obvious. A lot of condoms ads take the predictable risqué approach. This one doesn’t. It delivers the message in a unique way and ends up entertaining, as well as surprising the viewer.

Dating profiles need to take a unique approach as well. If you end up writing your dating profile the same way that everyone else does, then you’ll always end up being one of many instead of being the one. Have a look at these examples of the best online dating profiles and learn how to write a better online dating profile of your own (sorry for sounding redundant, but these words help me show up in searches…it’s good marketing, what can I say).

Better still, uncover some of your unique aspects and anecdotes by completing the personality quiz. It’s a great first step to a better dating profile. The second step is to hire me. Everyone wants to find love no matter how cool we try to play it. So, if you’re serious finding the love you want and maximizing all your chances online, then get expert help. Check out the samples of great online dating profiles and see the difference I can make.
