The dating profile featured today has a profile writing mistake that I see frequently. Usually, it’s an approach that men fall into, but it’s clearly still applicable to both single men and women.
The best way to avoid profile writing mistakes is to hire me even if it’s just for a consultation. However, if you can’t, then I hope that regularly featuring excerpts followed by insights will help.
From the dating profile of a 28-year old woman.
Fun, girly girl, into tennis, swimming, sports and God. Healthy and fit. Financially independent with stable job. Looking for long-term.
My critique.
Never speak about yourself in the third person. For one, it makes you sound a little like that crazy person from Silence of the Lambs, “it rubs lotion on it’s skin” – not especially reassuring, nor approachable.
In addition, it’s just not engaging at all. It’s distant and impersonal, which is 100% contrary to the mindset that singles need to be in when online dating. That’s where you’re meant to reach out and connect, not keep everyone at arm’s length.
Besides, very little effort seem to go into this glib technique. If you can’t make the effort to form real sentences then are you really willing to make the effort to go through the full online dating process?
What’s the solution? Just add one word: “I”. It’s all of one character and yet it can make a huge difference in transforming an impersonal message into one that sounds human.
