This week, I’ve been scanning random dating profiles written by LA singles.
Thus far, I’ve written one blog post where I shared an excerpt from one of the dating profiles. I then provided a critique with profile writing tips based on my expertise in ad writing and marketing (check out my bio).
Today’s blog features this excerpt from a single woman in her 40’s followed by my critique.
Tomorrow, I’ll post another blog about singles in LA and then I’ll move on to other cities throughout the US. You may want to follow along and see if you can spot differences.
First off i hate talking about myself….i like fun…. football…laughing…reading and dancing…I love my kids and grandkids..one of my grandsons is autistic and I do volunteer work for autistic kids now.
To start of your profile with “I hate” is an unnecessarily negative approach. It sounds grouchy. If you don’t like talking about yourself and you don’t like the process of online dating then don’t do it. It’s merely an alternative. It’s not the only way to find a soulmate.
Though this is an excerpt of her dating profile, hers wasn’t much longer. If you don’t give people enough information then you don’t give them any leverage for contacting you. Profiles are great conversation starters so start by writing yours out. The ideal length is 250 words, long enough to get attention, but short enough to keep it.

Finally – it’s not wise to share very personal information about yourself, let alone about other people – like your grandson. I understand that she’s trying to get across the importance of her volunteer work. However, it could have been better addressed had she said something like “I do volunteer work with autistic children. It’s a cause that’s dear to me”.
She also posted a picture of her grandchild, which is extremely dangerous. Predators look for this and they’re great at a manipulating their way into your life. Please keep children off of dating sites.
