I saw the online dating profile by a man whose words made my eye twitch. On one hand he wrote, “If I describe myself here what will we have to talk about?”. On the other hand he followed with, “let’s meet for dinner and good conversation.”
Really? Does someone actually think that, by not filling out their dating profile, they can sell others on the promise of being a good conversationalist?
3 more reasons why “Want to know just ask” is a bad strategy.
Besides that lapse in judgment, here are three more to consider:
1) If the only thing you’re putting out there are photos, then the implication is that you’re good looking enough to compete on looks alone.
You’re not.
No matter how good looking you are, others online are just as good looking – and they’re smart enough to know that an “about me” section is an opportunity to seal the deal.
2) By saying “want to know just ask”, you give no one any reason to want to know anything. However common, even a few lines of copy about your interests can provide icebreakers. Better still if you add anecdotes to the interests so that they go from common to unique.
3) When you don’t fill out a profile, you not only risk losing a person’s interest because you leave them feeling indifferent, you can actually annoy people.
There’s a process in online dating. If you treat it shabbily, then you risk insulting countless singles taking it seriously and genuinely looking for love.
So don’t be lazy, spoiled, or too good for words. For more information on this, be sure to read “Does a good online dating profile even matter” and “Is your online dating profile too good for words?”
If you can’t write your dating profile, let me.
I’m an ad writer and an online dating profile writer. As such, I not only write well, I write effectively too.
So, take the pressure off and let me write your dating profile on your behalf. In addition to writing in a way that engages and persuades, I also keep it true to you by asking questions that allow me to use your words and anecdotes.
