How to Write a Dating Profile: Tips 10 and 11.

At the beginning of every week, I post a blog that critiques excerpts from two arbitrary dating profiles that I’ve found on dating sites. The blog is specific to online dating profiles, however the critiques are based on my 20 years of experience as an ad writer and marketing expert.

At the end of every week I post a blog with more emphasis on self-marketing. It’s written in a way that both informs and entertains. So do watch for it on Friday.

In the meantime, I offer the following tips:

How to write a dating profile, tip 10:

Looking for the real thing? You found it! I am an active, truthfull, trusting and caring man. I love to give affection and tell a girl what she meens to me frequently. I cook, keep an orderly life and have a good carreer and I’m very ambitous. I maintain a very positive attatude and am looking for a like minded lady. Looking for the real thing? Come find out for yourself why this man is spiecial.

This man seems like a nice guy. In addition, he’s smiling in all his photos so he appears approachable. The profile itself is not interesting, nor is the opener. A lot can be improved. Mostly though, what needs significant improvement is his spelling. This is a basic. Yet, so many people are sloppy when it comes to checking – and double checking – their writing. I might overlook a typo here and there, but this is too much. It could limit his chances, particlularly with women who like the company of accomplished men, which he suggests he is. If you have difficulty with spelling and grammar, have a friend check it for you. If you have some kind of disorder, like dyslexia (which, ironically is hard to spell!), be sure to come clean about it in the first email with a suitor, so that they have an understanding and are less likely to be critical.

How to write a dating profile, tip 11:

Here I am again…..I didn’t meet the 1…..I really didn’t really get a whole lot of response.  I am really not looking to go on endless dates with endless men. I, like most people am looking for the right one. Please feel free to drop me line. I am a fairly interesting person. Well I think so, maybe you will too.Well I wasn’t sure how to approach this….so this is it.

What a depressing opener! She sounds like the kid no one wants to play with. This is not a confident approach. What’s more, no one wants the person who is constantly rejected (which is what she implies).  In addition, when she says that she doesn’t want to go on endless dates, my guess is that she’s saying she wants to meet a good guy and that she’s not into being a serial dater. However, the way she’s worded it, makes her sound almost lazy  – as though she’d rather take one of the first guys who comes along rather than do a lot of dating. It’s easy to interpret her words that way because, after all, she makes it clear with, “this is it”, that she didn’t try too hard to craft her profile and sound engaging. On that note – she’s a “fairly” interesting person? That’s not good enough when you’re competing with people who are doing everything they can to be really interesting.

For a blog that combines pop, fun and self-marketing advice, be sure to come back on Friday for “Online Dating and the Shannon Tweed Syndrome”.

In the meantime, if you want to start crafting a better profile right now, get started on uncovering some of your unique traits by completing the personality quiz. It costs nothing to do, but it’s an important first step in writing an online dating profile that stands out. Once you’ve completed it, you can incorporate some the best answers into your dating profile, or you can hire me to do it. I’m trained to know what to pick and where to put it.

Feel free to check out the online dating samples of my work, as well. If you like the blogs, then you’ll like the tweets. Would also love to see you on Facebook.
