This is the second blog to feature an excerpt from the dating profile of a single online dating in California. I pick the dating profiles arbitrarily and change them slightly to keep the anonymity of the writer. I then critique an excerpt based on my years as an ad writer and marketing expert – skills that I’ve since transferred to writing online dating profiles.

Even though the critiques focus on a particular dating profile, they’re meant to help anyone who’s online dating. The more examples you see, the better chance you have at improving your own online dating profile.Today’s blog features an excerpt from the dating profile of a man in his mid-40s:

This dating thing is new to me. I’ve been out of a long-term relationship for awhile now and am ready to date and start as friends. I was married for 14 yrs. I never thought I’d be here. Sometimes life throws you a curve ball. You have to pick yourself up and move on.

Now for my critique:

I read this man’s online dating profile in total and he seems like a nice guy. Unfortunately, he’d lose his audience at the opener. There’s nothing engaging about it. It doesn’t make me smile, make me curious, or arouse my interest in the least. There’s no need to share your dating history or curve balls with strangers. Even though he talks about picking himself up, which demonstrates a good attitude, it nonetheless comes across as a bit depressing.

My suggestion is to keep old relationships out of the conversation with potential new matches. Also, be sure to start your profile in a way that makes someone want to know more. A depressing soliloquy won’t do it.

Another mistake is being too personal. Even though the best online dating profiles have a personal and conversational style to them, they aren’t meant to be quite that personal. Keep in mind that you’re talking to strangers.
