Online dating and, well, baseball analogies.

I used to be a big fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I believed that if I was just a little bit buffer, a little bit more flexible, a little bit more intense, and a lot less absolutely terrified of vampires with bloodlust (or all vampires for that matter), I too could make a career out of kickboxing my gory, violent way through the undead underground.

However, because I wasn’t quite there yet, I had my marketing career to fall back on. My bases were covered.

I also once loved a pair of high-heeled boots that made me look tall. I loved them more than Christmas and all my birthdays combined. However, I couldn’t walk in them. So, I bought another pair of stupendous boots. Though they didn’t make me look like the hottest Amazonian on the planet, they did give me the most enviable gait.

Together, the two boots covered all my needs. When one wasn’t ideal, I could always fall back on the other.

I’m fond of backup plans. I’m fond of reaching an objective by counting on more than one option. We do it all the time in advertising. We have media buyers who consider a client’s objectives (the demographic they want to reach and what media best attracts them) and then they design a plan that covers all the bases. For instance, if you run TV campaign, a media buyer might suggest supplementing it with print ads too.

The other day a friend of mine said he didn’t like online dating because he resented having to meet someone who can’t even spell. In a moment of utter logic I said, “don’t online date.” He then lamented that it’s impossible to meet anyone otherwise.

Is he between a rock and a hard place? Not according me. The way I see it, online dating increases his chances of meeting ideal matches. It stands to reason that his chances of meeting people who aren’t perfect matches also increase. However, a good profile can help weed them out.

This is why I like online dating so much. It provides an option – a back up, if you will – for traditional dating. It makes sure that all your bases are covered.

So, before ruling out online dating or slapping a negative label on it, consider what the options are without it. In short, do what good advertisers do and determine the best possible ways of meeting your objectives.
