Today I went onto Match.com and looked at random profiles. I came upon one that I thought was representative of the kind of mistakes women make when writing their online dating profiles.
Here’s an excerpt from that dating profile followed by my critique. By featuring these excerpts my goal is to help you avoid some of the mistakes singles make when writing their online dating profile.
Excerpt from the profile of a 28 year old woman:
Hi, thanks for reading my profile. I’m an active woman with a good heart looking to meet a man for a long term relationship. My party girl stage is through and I’m looking ahead with the hope of falling in love. I have great friends and a good life but I’m missing that special someone for holding hands in the movie theatre and having long conversations over good wine.
My critique:
When you’re online dating, you can end up reading a lot of dating profiles. As such, you tend to skim through them unless there’s something that really grabs you. That’s why your opener is the most important part of your profile.
This opener start with hi and thanks. It’s not only a little flat, it also sounds grateful, which isn’t a confident approach.
In addition, there’s no need to suggest that you were a party girl. Chances are that small mention is enough to attract the wrong type of guy.
Lastly, this dating profile sounds like many others. It’s generic. Rather than say
“hold hands at the movies”, describe the movies that you see yourselves enjoying. Rather than mention conversations, describe some of the topics that you find interesting.
A final note about writing your online dating profile.
It’s not easy to write an online dating profile. You not only have to describe yourself, you also have to do it in an interesting and unique way.
