As someone who’s spent about 20 years as a marketing expert and ad writer, I know the importance of a good presentation.
Now that I also write online dating profiles, I’m fully immersed in the world of personal presentations too.
As a result, I’ve picked up a lot of suggestions. Here are just a few:
Online dating dos
1) Do wear clothes. That is – apparel other than undershirts, Santa outfits and bathing suits.
2) Do write a profile. One long “zzzzzz” to make up the minimum characters required for your self-summary doesn’t count. It does however suggest that you’re a total bore so at least you’re being honest.
3) Do smile – especially when you take a photo of yourself looking at yourself through the mirror because, well, what’s not to smile about?
Online Dating Don’ts
1) Don’t lie about your age unless you’ve removed photos with parachute pants, walkmans and acid wash jeans. Of note: lava lamps had a moment of retro chic revival. Mood rings didn’t.
2) Don’t use clichés like Live Love Laugh unless you want to weed out people with the intellectual capacity to string together original thought. Two “glass half-full” kind of people are a “cup runneth over” of annoyance.
3) Don’t say you’re young at heart unless you want to sound too old for whomever it is you’re trying to convince you’re young enough for.
Online Dating “Oh no you didn’ts”
1) Cleavage shots don’t convey “looking for an intelligant” man, neither does spelling intelligent wrong.
2) Details of your C-section, stepdaughter’s boyfriend’s murder, and the accident that caused your muscle to hang from your calf are interesting – never.
3) Wearing a towel is not the same as wearing an article of clothing.
