Tips for writing your dating profile. Dec.10th, 2013.

I scanned a number of online dating sites today and read quite a few dating profiles for women. I kept noticing an approach that I’ve seen before and it’s one that both men and women make the mistake of using. Below I’ve posted an excerpt of a profile that uses the approach followed by my critique. Can you spot the online dating profile writing mistake? It’s a pretty common one. From the dating profile of a 31-year old woman I’m… read more

Today’s tip for writing your online dating profile. Dec.5, 2013.

I like to post the excerpt of a random dating profile and then critique it. I choose profiles that have fairly common mistakes to prevent you from making them too. I found today’s excerpt on okCupid. I’ve noticed that profiles on free sites tend to be less savvy than those on paid sites. Yet, free or not, you’re online and you’re goal is to be attractive. So, while a free site might not cost you, a bad profile can cost… read more

Online Dating Profile Writing Tips for Wed. Nov.27, 2014.

Today I explored match.com and read the dating profiles of both men and women. I kept finding one common and constant marketing mistake. Though it’s one that I’ve addressed previously, it warrants another mention. Below you’ll find an excerpt from one of the dating profiles that carries the mistake followed by my critique. From the dating profile of a 38-year old woman. I’m often described as fun, sarcastic, loving, optimistic, kind, compassionate, intelligent, easy going, thoughtful, friendly, outgoing, resourceful, resilient… read more

Online dating profiles and “what your friends say”.

I’ve read a few dating profiles of late that begin with “friends say I’m…” Often this is followed by a list of positive adjectives. I even saw one profile the other day that read, “friends say I’m an adventurous 6 foot tall athletic male”. I looked at the photo and he was a woman. Just kidding. He was, indeed, six feet tall and athletic, but I doubt very much that his friends would describe him that way. When I read… read more

Online Dating And Choosing Out of Your League.

The notion of a potential mate being “out of one’s league” is crass, insulting and arrogant. It’s also not entirely without foundation. In many cases we do tend to pair up with matches similar to us in looks (not to mention intellect), thus dating “within our league”. After all, hitting on someone much more attractive not only means entering a more competitive arena, it also puts us at greater risk of rejection. In evolutionary terms, where would that leave us?… read more

Online Dating and Brad Pitt’s Ponytail.

The other day a friend said, “Hey, you look like Brad Pitt”. This disturbed me for three good reasons: A) I’m a female B) I don’t have dark blond hair C) Last I checked (and I check regularly!), I didn’t have facial hair. Truthfully, it was C that caused me the greatest concern. Thankfully, my worries were pacified when she added, “He was at some show wearing a ponytail too.” Like many females, I’ve been donning a ponytail off and… read more

Luv and online dating profiles.

Not long ago, I noticed that people were throwing around the expression “I heart” rather than saying “I love”. I assume this was meant to be cute. Personally, as a writer and someone over 3 years of age, I found it to be annoying. I’m fine with using a heart as a symbol for love. It’s a great visual and has certainly been used successfully in the ads for New York. However, to use it instead of love in a… read more

Online Dating Profile Dos, Don’ts And “Oh No You Didn’ts”.

As someone who’s spent about 20 years as a marketing expert and ad writer, I know the importance of a good presentation. Now that I also write online dating profiles, I’m fully immersed in the world of personal presentations too. As a result, I’ve picked up a lot of suggestions. Here are just a few: Online dating dos 1) Do wear clothes. That is – apparel other than undershirts, Santa outfits and bathing suits. 2) Do write a profile. One long… read more

Online dating profiles: tips from Taylor Swift’s head.

A lot of people make fun of Taylor Swift. Amy Poehler and Tina Fey implied she was boy-hungry at the 2013 Golden Globes. Conversely, Chelsea Handler poked (so to speak) fun at her presumed virginity. Personally, if I were a 23-year old woman making $57 million a year, these meanies could screw themselves. That said, the other day I saw a video of Swift headbanging while wearing a lavender swing dress. I admit, it was mesmerizing, but I was still appalled.… read more

Online dating profile writing tip: find your inner Yoko.

In the news this week: Lindsay went braless (gasp), Beyonce posed for H & M, and Yoko Ono tweeted shots of John Lennon’s bloody glasses to deliver her opinion on gun control. Of these women, who do you think is the sexiest? My vote goes to Yoko. At 80 years old, she boasts a fearless and fearsome passion – that is, a power – that can outstrip, outshake and outdo women well over half her age. She’s been like that… read more
