As an ad writer and online dating profile writer, I know the importance of a great online dating presentation. If you want to increase your chances of finding your soulmate online then I encourage you to make your online dating photos and your online dating “about me” spectacular. Will it work? It could. After all, others have found success.
In fact, a few months ago, I had a guest blogger known as CB. She told the story of her internet romance from online (and long distance!) to offline and to the day her soulmate proposed. Over the next few weeks I’ll post a series of her blogs that continue the story leading up to the day of her fantastic wedding. Enjoy!
LONG DISTANCE PLANS AND COMFORT STATIONS
The simple November wedding was suddenly becoming not-so-simple.
And organizing while 1900 km (1200 miles!) apart was a challenge to say the least.
Still, JGS didn’t seem daunted by some of the bizarre-sounding instructions I was giving him, including the order for the infamous rubber ducks. And the best thing,
he had a caterer ready to roll and a friend’s offer of a pretty fall field at his ranch.
Things seemed to be falling into place.
Not so fast.
The guest list was expanding. A tent seemed like a good option, in case of rain or cold weather. But with more and more guests, it became clear we couldn’t impose upon the washroom facilities of his friend — whose wife was encouraging us to select a field rather far from the home. Okay, rental toilets. Then, where would people park?
What about power for the speakers for the band?
Oh, had I not mentioned the live, 5-member jazz band?
Just as I was about to become exasperated with “men,” JGS called me with a possible solution.
Down the road from the ranch, a state park. Complete with a pavilion available for rental, not to mention a hotel and cabins on site.
“How about toilets?” I queried. “Oh, you women and your toilets!” he responded cheerfully.
So we both got in our sexist moments. And the park did indeed have washroom facilities. But we hadn’t heard the end of toilet challenges.
Still, at least the setting was in place.
JGS enlisted a friend at work who was very enthusiastic about organizing parties, who wanted to get onboard with the event planning.
Now, if we could only get that caterer to return our calls…..
A TRIP DOWN SOUTH
The wedding was still a couple of months away. But I was missing my sweetie.
And needed to deliver some of the wedding favours and decorations I was already collecting up north. There were butterflies again, this time about whether this event could be pulled off with the distance involved.
So I found a good price on an airline ticket and headed south of the border, to JGS’s home in America’s south west. Yes, the weather was fine!
It was my first visit to his home, and I was warmly welcomed by my fiancé, his mother, youngest son and a menagerie including dogs, cats and chickens. It was delightful!
But we had work to do, so no lounging around with family and pets.
First step, meeting everyone. His friend who was offering to organize was right on board with our ideas for decor and flowers. We finally found the caterer, who enjoyed talking wine with me, and I believe has invited himself to Wedding 2 up north! Tracking down the band leader was a little more challenging, since musicians aren’t early risers, but we finally reached the man with the very deep voice, and confirmed his presence.
I got to see the pavilion in the park, and wondered if maybe it was too big! But all looked well, and the setting overlooking a lake was gorgeous.
When I flew back north a few days later, the butterflies had calmed down. We had a good crew all ready and willing to pitch in and help on the wedding day — one day after Thanksgiving Day in the United States. People were smiling and excited.
What could go wrong?
