As the holiday season approaches, more singles are dating online with the hope of meeting potential mates – or at least, dates – for all the upcoming holiday parties. Without properly vetting out wrong matches, these seasonal social occasions can turn into the bleakest of white Christmases.
How then do you write your online dating profile that attracts the right matches while weeding out the wrong ones? By identifying the kind of matches you want and making clear that you’re the right match for them.
It’s called niche marketing. As an ad writer and online dating profile writer, it’s a technique that I use all the time.

To write a dating profile that attracts a specific type of match, you first have to look at what kind of mate will truly be fulfilling for you. I’ve seen both men and women go online and hit the hottest people with no regard for shared interests and values.
For one, great looking people get inundated with emails and winks (a testament to how shallow we can all be). As such, they often overlook many of them. For another, while chemistry matters, it rarely has anything to do with looks. If you waste your time targeting the wrong things, then you’ll end up with the wrong matches.
Instead determine what kind of person you’d really enjoy having in your life and then craft your dating profile in a way that speaks to them. One caveat – I’m not suggesting that you write your online dating profile about what you want. I’m suggesting that you write it in a way that demonstrates your interests and values so that like-minded matches “recognize” you and are attracted by what you’d bring to their lives.
With the right matches, you’ll have a better chance of meeting the one you’ll want to stay with season after season. At the very least, you’ll meet people who can make holiday parties holly jolly not oh golly (most painful pun ever!).
