Today I’ve chosen to feature an excerpt from an online dating profile that I found while scanning arbitrary ones on POF. I selected this man’s dating profile because I’ve noticed that a lot single men – and women – begin theirs in this manner. By showcasing it and explaining why it’s a mistake, my hope is you’ll be less likely to make it too.
From the online dating profile of a 39-year old man.
When I first filled out my profile I put the settings to “dating” but then changed it to “Relationship”. Ultimately this is what I am searching for, but I need to make clear that it starts with dating. Only then can it move into more.
My critique
The opener of your online dating profile is the most critical part because you have mere seconds to engage a reader. Explaining the mental process you went through when filling out your dating profile is not interesting at any point, let alone in those crucial first lines. This is especially true when you unnecessarily explain that a “relationship” starts with dating. How is this news?
A final word about writing your dating profile.
It’s difficult enough to write about yourself. It’s harder still to “market” yourself. As an ad writer, I’m trained to find your unique traits and then write your dating profile in a way that’s engaging and dynamic. Better yet, because I ask a lot of questions, I get enough information so that I can use your expressions and anecdotes to put it all together. That way you go online with a dating profile that’s truly you.
